If you think the pot holes in your street are bad, then take a look at the old A road that skirts Mam Tor in Derbyshire. Mended many times, it was finally abandoned about 20 years ago.
Now the only traffic is walkers and cyclists.

What's great about the road now is that it's a great car-free route up to the tops, cycleable all the way if difficult in parts *
