closed up turnstiles, shut kiosks, acres of emptiness, not a human in sight - our 21st century folly - the Dome
Since I wrote this it seems the Dome has been resurrected as the O2, a popular concert venue - it did cost the us a lot though (£800 million of Millennium funding compared with 5000 miles of the National Cycle Network for £50 million rated by the Audit Commission the best use of millennium funding). *

my interest in follies first began with a Spike Milligan programme on the subject in which this folly railway tunnel entrance on the Brighton line was featured - notice the bungalow neatly framed by the towers

for the last two years at Reading University I lived in a flat in London where so much was happening and commuted to Reading and slept on floors. On finishing university I contrarily moved to Reading! A few weeks in a squat then in the mad house of Bulmershe Road where I positioned a cupboard across the door to my room - to get in you had to step through. No, I hadn't come across the 'Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe' - it was just part of our anarchic environment *

I even managed to get the landlord (a Mr Scattergood) to come through once - still I didn't paint my room black gloss like artist Malcolm (yes every surface) or dye the milk different colours or drive a motorbike in the hallway or leave chappati mixture rising on a heater & beggar off & forget it *

I was proud of that symbol of American imperialism, a cross made of Pepsi cans and that door covered in velvet squares.
Also within those wall dwelt Griff & Christine & Joe Lear & did Kaktus & John Bangs live there too? *
