During my recent cycle tour of Scotland, all the hostels were full on the west coast so I ended up cycling 70 miles from Durness to Rogart near the east coast. My bed for the night? - a railway carriage. Comfortable, cosy and a friendly welcome - highly recommended!

The Highland Clearances was one of the many shameful events in British history (alas there are so many). Whilst cycling around the north west highlands, Ross, Cromarty, Caithness and Sutherland I saw the physical remains of hundreds of former crofts as well as more modern reminders such as this statue 'The Emigrants' and the school children's story in the Strathnaver Museum.

Co-ordinated by George Fairbrother of Sussex Peace Alliance, the Flame of Hope was taken from Dover to Portsmouth, with different groups acting as a relay.
I planned to cycle it all, slowly behind the walkers. After Portsmouth George is taking the Flame to New York for the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) talks in May where he will engage with many diplomats.
