My cycle tour of Ireland Spring 2016
Posted by: roy on Monday, May 30, 2016 - 09:57 PM
Protest back last night from cycling all around Ireland. 840 miles in 24 days of cycling, an average of 35 miles a day. The Irish people were lovely, they were kind, helpful, willing to spend time chatting.

Stories: Selma James article on the Jeremy Corbyn campaign
Posted by: roy on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 - 08:46 AM
Protest From Global Women's Strike:
The Guardian rejected Selma James’s article on Jeremy Corbyn but we thought you’d like to see it.

A time of reckoning

Corbyn’s campaign meeting attracted, in addition to the 900 in the Camden Centre, two overflow roomfuls plus another 500 in the street outside. At least half were women. Mark Serwotka of Public and Commercial Service union and a real charmer, chaired. Among the speakers were a young Asian woman volunteering at Stop the War, a councillor wanting Labour’s backing when she opposed cuts, anti-racist former councillor Martha Osamor and a rejuvenated Ken Livingstone. (

The crowd was ecstatic. Much of Corbyn´s political programme had been agreed by

Protest I have just spent a week with 50 people on the 85 mile SCND Spring Walk for Peace from Edinburgh to Faslane, among them 5 delightful teenagers, four boys (youngest 12) and a girl. They were such good company. We have never been closer to getting rid of nuclear weapons than this September - if Scotland votes for Independence they’re gone and England has nowhere for them.
Unlike the youngsters and the older walkers, I cycled so my feet weren’t sore but as they went down one side of the road, I was on the other losing my voice talking to onlookers, an ex-Londoner now Lancastrian talking about the walk and urging Scots to vote Yes!
I so hope they do, I’ve been campaigning against nuclear weapons for 50 years and it would send such a positive message to the world.
I did add jokingly that if they got independence, they should move the border south to the Trent and Mersey – we in the north get a raw deal with London-centric politics and spending too.
If you know anyone resident in Scotland, please urge them to vote YES.

Come to Peace News Summer Camp this year
Posted by: roy on Monday, March 10, 2014 - 08:41 AM
Protest I highly recommend coming to Peace News Summer Camp. I've been to the previous five and have found them all very enjoyable, stimulating, re-energising and always a great bunch of friendly people.

This year's camp is at Theberton, near Leiston, Suffolk. Now in its sixth year, it aims to help build a radical movement for the future by creating an inclusive, participatory community today. A family-friendly and renewably-powered camp, we’re running from 31 July – 4 August.

change through colour
Posted by: roy on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 - 09:51 AM
Protest A 64 year-old man in Istanbul decided to brighten the neighbourhood by painting rainbow colours on some wide, grey, crumbling stairs. When municipal officials sent workers after nightfall to hurriedly repaint the steps grey, a quiet revolution started on Twitter. Not only did volunteers come out to repaint those stairs that Huseyin Cetinel had spent hundreds of dollars on, they painted other stairs and walkways in cities around Turkey, posting photos on social media. A Pandora's Box of colour had unwittingly been opened.

Layla's story: jailed after reporting a sexual assault
Posted by: Roy on Saturday, August 13, 2011 - 09:21 PM
Protest In 2009, Layla Ibrahim told police she had been the victim of a savage sexual assault. So why did she end up in jail?

Simon Hattenstone and Afua Hirsch, Friday 12 August 2011 23.02 BST

Sara Ibrahim says that since the day her little sister Layla was sent to prison, her family has been faced with a simple choice: "Do we give up and just get on with our lives, or do we clear her name? And we've decided if it takes the rest of our lives, that's what we'll do – we'll clear her name."
